Navigating Careers and Recruitment: The Power of Loss, Learning, and Lasting Relationships

Written by Executive Search Partner Nisha Patel

The Journey of Careers and Connections

A dear friend recently wrote a post that truly resonated with me, emphasising the importance of connection, empathy, and vulnerability in both our personal and professional lives. Her insights reaffirmed something I’ve always believed: careers aren’t defined solely by achievements but also by the challenges we overcome and the relationships we build along the way.

As an Executive Researcher at GRG Executive Search, I see this every day. My role isn’t just about filling positions; it’s about helping people see opportunities they might not have considered and developing relationships that extend far beyond a single job search. Sometimes, that means reaching out to someone who isn’t actively looking for a new role, figuratively tapping them on the shoulder and introducing them to an opportunity that shifts their perspective. Other times, it involves supporting candidates who don’t secure a role, ensuring they still feel valued and prepared for what’s next.

The Hidden Value of Setbacks in Career Growth

A rejection email. A final-stage interview that didn’t result in an offer. A role that seemed like the perfect fit but went to another candidate. These moments can be disappointing, but they also provide opportunities for growth. As Emma’s post so beautifully expressed, we often learn more from our struggles than from our successes. It’s how we process these experiences and move forward that defines us.

I understand this on a deeply personal level. My career in executive search has been shaped by both triumphs and challenges. Balancing the demands of my profession while navigating grief and the responsibilities of sole parenting has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perspective. These lessons have influenced how I approach my work, ensuring I always see the human side of every career move.

Why Executive Search Is About People, Not Just Placements

Recruitment is often perceived as transactional—matching candidates to roles, closing mandates, and moving on. But for me, it has always been about people. The candidates who don’t get the job are just as important as those who do because job searching at a senior level is about more than just the outcome. It’s about the journey, the learning, and the long-term relationships that develop along the way.

Some of the most fulfilling moments in my career have come from staying in touch with professionals long after an initial conversation. I’ve seen candidates embrace opportunities they never imagined—not because they were actively looking, but because someone took the time to understand their aspirations and guide them in a new direction. I’ve also supported candidates through setbacks, helping them gain insights from their experiences and remain open to future opportunities.

Advice for Those Struggling in Their Career Search

If you’re feeling uncertain about your next career move, here is some key advice:

  • Rejection is not a reflection of your worth. Sometimes, it’s about timing, company culture, or leadership fit rather than your capabilities.
  • Be open to opportunities beyond your immediate vision. The right role may not always look as you expect.
  • Focus on relationships, not just applications. A strong network and meaningful conversations can open doors in ways a CV alone cannot.
  • Extract lessons from every experience. Whether it’s refining your interview technique, gaining a clearer understanding of your value, or reassessing your goals, every setback provides an opportunity for growth.
  • Seek support when needed. Whether from a recruiter, mentor, or peer, having guidance can make a significant difference.

Final Thoughts

Success isn’t just about securing the right role. It’s about how you navigate challenges, learn from setbacks, and continue to build meaningful relationships. As executive recruiters, our role isn’t just about making placements—it’s about helping people see potential, offering guidance, and fostering long-term connections.

If you’re in a period of transition, know that your journey is still unfolding. Sometimes, the best opportunities arise when you least expect them. And above all, remember—every experience, whether a win or a setback, is moving you forward.
